With the Vendée Globe in focus this week, it was brilliant to have Jessica Watson on our Adventures Weekly show on Friday to chat about her incredible record-breaking solo non-stop and unassisted round-the-world adventure ten years ago as a 16-year-old. Jess in her words is an “ordinary girl who went out and achieved her goals”, a great way to look at life and how you can break it all down into key moments. We also spoke about isolation during lockdown, the upcoming movie about her adventure, and the boating App Deckee, which Jess co-founded to help more people enjoy their own boating adventures.
Jess and I were also excited to announce that I will be coming on board as a brand ambassador for Deckee; while we keep covering adventures, their free App will be helping us all stay safe and informed on the water with their free boating safety app focused around helping boaters stay safe and informed on the water through real-time access to crowd-sourced reports, weather conditions, vessel positions and official safety alerts.
Deckee have also begun working on an additional feature “Where is the Sailor Girl?” So you can “follow” exactly where we are at with sailing events around the world with direct links to our videos and photos from that event site.

Nic Douglass, the ‘Sailor Girl’, announced as an official Deckee Ambassador
Deckee, the boating safety app, is proud to announce Nic Douglass, aka ‘Adventures of a Sailor Girl’, as an official brand ambassador. Nic Douglass has become synonymous with sailing culture, and with a dynamic career spanning racing and communications, she fully embodies the Deckee brand and mission to keep boaters safe and informed on the water.
“Sailing for me is about performance and fun while being as safe as possible at all times. When we respect our playground, we can make the most of it. I’m delighted to be partnering with Deckee whose approach to taking to the water is so aligned with my own”
Nic Douglass, Sailor Girl
Deckee’s Head of Community, Eugenie Alder, said “Nic is a perfect personification of the spirit of Deckee. We share a belief that sailing and boating in general should be a fun and safe experience and we are delighted to welcome her to the Deckee crew”
Nic has been sailing for most of her life. Some of her first memories are of sailing on a Laser with her Dad, Rob Douglass, when she was small enough to tack through the vang. She started racing at eight and competed for over twenty five years on the Tasar with her skipper, mentor, and life-long coach, Dad – Rob Douglass.
Nic and Rob have won three World Championships (2005, 2009, 2019), eight National Championships and six State Championships together. Nic has been successful on a global scale in Women’s Match Racing, sailed on a foiling IMOCA 60, Wild Oats XI, Comanche, Interlodge and Ichi Ban to name just a few well-known racing yachts, has won the Australian Sailing Sport Promotion Award for three successive years (2016, 2017, 2018) and was Canberra Yachtswoman of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
Now Nic is known by most as the “Sailor Girl”, a presenter and commentator of sailing events in Australia and around the world.
