One for the memory banks for sure!
With the bad luck of getting stuck on the pin at the start of the final race, knifing the mark from their foils, and then sailing through with new pressure, Emirates Team New Zealand timed their run of good luck perfectly to steal the race win from Oracle Team USA and take the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in New York.
The skipper’s definitely had mixed feelings from an excited Glenn Ashby, the winning skipper, “that probably goes down as one of the craziest days of yachting of all-time, well in my career” to Sir Ben Ainslie, “it’s a trade off that you have to make between being in an awesome city like this [New York] and what it does for the America’s Cup brand… as opposed to the integrity of the racing”.
I interviewed all of the skippers starting with Ashby (ETNZ), then Outteridge (Artemis Racing) who won race 1, Barker (SoftBank Team Japan), Spithill (Oracle Team USA) on the tough day and being the home crowd, Ainslie (Land Rover BAR) and finally Cammas (Groupama Team France) who won race 2 today, his first win of the series, which he said he will celebrate with “wine and cheese” in good humour from the initial press conference.
Thanks for following the adventures –
