In the first start of the day, the whole fleet was over the line early due to current, except for Artemis Racing, who was then one of two boats, the other being Land Rover BAR, who were able to round the first mark of the course. Eventually the first start was abandoned when the leaders were unable to round the gate marks, and then a second start was abandoned before the sequence was complete. The third start seemed to be close to getting away when the breeze reversed to a northerly, but was called off right as the gun went. Land Rover BAR were set to runaway on the first leg after approaching the start from above the line, and then utilising the current (Solent style?) to slingshot into a perfect position to nail the pin.
With the broadcast window from 2pm to 3:30pm each day, the organisers were out of time for official racing, opting to hold a “substitute race” in their remaining thirty minutes on the Hudson. This race was won by SoftBank Team Japan, followed by Artemis Racing, Groupama Team France, Oracle Team USA, Land Rover BAR and Emirates Team NZ. The results from this race will only count if no racing gets away tomorrow, which is unlikely given that a solid 18 knots is forecast.
